Thanksgiving 1947 Style

While perusing Gourmet's online catalog, I came across this lovely Thanksgiving round-up by Clementine Paddleford originally published in the November 1947 issue. Wait 'til you see some of the prices—certainly makes me want for yesteryear. So, has anyone started thinking about their Thanksgiving menus this year? What favorite Gourmet recipes will adorn your holiday table?

Cooking to Keep Gourmet's Legacy Alive

We're frustrated and saddened by the closing of Gourmet magazine. As we've said on Sassy Radish, Pithy and Cleaver, and In Jennie's Kitchen, it was more to us than just a magazine. It's tied up in our food memories, it encouraged us to think about where our food came from, and it was instrumental in our development as cooks and people. And so, as Jen has written, we're tipping our hats. As Olga has said, we're cooking to keep Gourmet's memory and spirit alive. (By the way, this project is not associated or endorsed by Gourmet, Epicurious, or Conde Nast, and Gourmet and Epicurious are the property of Conde Nast Publications.)

Gourmet, unbound is a collaborative project celebrating Gourmet magazine's 68 years of food knowledge. Every month, participating bloggers will cook, adapt, and write about a Gourmet recipe from that month's issue of any year of the magazine. We'll begin December 1 with all of your favorites (new and old) from past December issues of Gourmet. Submit a direct link to your post, along with a photo if you wish, and come back to see how others fared! We'll post a roundup here of all the participating posts (and a featured post or two.)

We hope you'll join us every month to celebrate Gourmet, explore old Gourmet recipes from every season season, revive family favorites from the magazine, and share your memories and thoughts.

Something is simmering...

Well, if you found your way here, then you've heard about Gourmet, unbound. We're ironing out, ahem, I mean prepping, all the details but here's what we can tell you. We know Gourmet was a rich part of so many lives, and yes—it wasn't just a magazine. It was so much more. Join Olga, Maggie and myself on keeping its memory alive in every home kitchen.

First up, we'll be preserving Gourmet's place, and the work of its legion of writers, editors, and recipe developers, this holiday season. The magazine's print life may be ending with the November issue, but at Gourmet, unbound, we'll be cooking up stories for years to come. If you'd like to be a part of this journey, then follow us on twitter and we'll be in touch with more news. Until then, start combing your old December issues, any year will do, and if you didn't save them, then search Epicurious using the keyword gourmet december, for your favorite recipes. The show must go on, and we refuse to let this holiday season take place without some Gourmet in our hearths.
